In keeping with the mission of the American Red Cross, Disaster Services will provide nationwide, timely, innovative, and effective planning, preparedness and relief that enhances the ability of people to anticipate, survive and recover from disasters. Each year, the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter responds to fires, floods, ice storms and prepares for major disasters such as hurricanes. To that end, it must ensure that it has trained disaster volunteers in place. Currently, the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter has approximately 250 registered Disaster Action Team (DAT) Members. Each Member works in one of our five zones, Upper Cape, Mid Cape, Lower Cape, Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. This is when our Disaster Action Team Members meet, in order, every month--at 6:30 pm unless otherwise noted: The Disaster Health Services Team: every other first Monday. The Mid Cape Zone: every first Tuesday. The Mass Care Team: every other second Monday. The Upper Cape Zone: every second Tuesday. The Lower Cape Zone: every second Thursday. The Partner Services Team: every other third Monday. The Disaster Mental Health Team: every other third Tuesday. The Family Services--Client Casework Team: every other third Thursday. The Martha's Vineyard Zone: every third Thursday at about 5 pm due to ferry needs. The Nantucket Zone: every third Monday at about 5:30 pm due to ferry needs. The Disaster Volunteer Management Team: every other fourth Monday. The Zone Leader's and Administrator's Meeting: every other fourth Thursday. The Disaster Assessment and Logistics Team: every other first Wednesday. When the scope of a disaster is big enough, that a response requires more than one zone, all groups combine to form one team. Each zone has an Emergency Response Vehicle. Volunteers sign up each month to be on call to respond to calls for help, as directed. While all disasters are local, if so desired and available, Trained Disaster Action Team Members can be deployed to disasters on a national scale, outside of our jurisdiction. DAT Members are expected to ensure that their families are safe first. Click here for special preparedness sheets, on fire safety, pet safety, heat waves, hurricanes and more...
