Disaster Services Course Descriptions

Classes for Disaster Volunteers are listed below.  The first class, Fulfilling Our Mission, is a requirement for all subsequent classes.
The course listings below are for the scheduled upcoming Disaster classes at the Cape Cod and Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross.

All classes are held at the Chapter House (unless otherwise noted) at 286 South Street, Hyannis. Weekday classes begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and last 3-3 1/2 hours. Weekend classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and last 6-8 hours (includes 1 hour for lunch).

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action

This course is the pre-requisite for all other disaster courses. This is a basic, entry-level course, that introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community's actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters.  It provides the foundation of service delivery standards for the American Red Cross by considering the fundamental Principles and Values of the Red Cross and how they would apply throughout the disaster cycle (prepare, respond and recover).

Mass Care

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to provide an overview of the activities performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation.  Participants will be employees and volunteers of the Red Cross and other agencies and community leaders who wish to serve in or work with Mass Care group activities on a disaster relief operation.

Shelter Operations

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.

Shelter Simulation

The purpose of this training is to provide participants with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter.

International Humanitarian Law

The course is intended to raise awareness among American Red Cross representatives and general audiences about the Geneva Conventions, the basic rules of international humanitarian law, and the role of the Red Cross during armed conflict.

CPR/AED

This course covers knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for cardiac and breathing emergencies and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) use for adults.

In order to take CPR/AED “free”, you must first take the following 5 prerequisite classes to become a certified volunteer:

Foundations of Disaster Mental Health

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Participants will be licensed mental health professionals who are considering becoming involved in Red Cross disaster mental health (DMH) preparedness, response and recovery activities at their local chapter and on national disaster relief operations.


Prerequisites required:
Mental health professional with a current state license, to include:
   • Counselor
   • Marriage and Family Therapist
   • Psychiatrist
   • Psychologist
   • A registered nurse (RN) with psychiatric nursing experience and
      training beyond the normal rotation required for a RN.
   • Social Worker

Client Casework - The 901
Client Casework is intended for Red Cross employees and volunteers who are intersted in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to conduct client interviews and provide appropriate emergency disaster assistance to help meet a client's immediate disaster-caused needs.

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment is a blended-learning course consisting of two components, online and instructor-led.
The online training component of the course (Part 1) resides on the Red Cross Learning Management System (LMS).  It provides an overview of the Disaster Assessment activity and its related tasks.  The instructor-led component of the course (Part 2) will reinforce and build upon content presented in the online component while providing participants with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop skills in Disaster Assessment through applied learning activities.

Psychological First Aid DSCLS206A, 09/06 (Basic)



This basic level Disaster Services course consists of five separate segments and a self-review questionnaire which is completed after the training has been completed. The course provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve. In addition, it provides practical suggestions about what you can say and do as you practice the principles of Psychological First Aid.

Logistics: An Overview (ARC 3071-1)

The purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the processes of Material Support Services activities in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed by material Support services workers and how they can become involved in their local chapter.

Logistics Simulation

The purpose of this training is to provide participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful logistical operation in their local chapter.

Bulk Distribution

The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the roles, responsibilities and tasks involved in setting up, operating and supporting a Bulk Distribution operation in the chapter and on a disaster relief operation.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to–
• Identify the tasks and responsibilities of a Bulk Distribution worker.
• Locate bulk distribution operational information in the handbook.
• Describe the role of the chapter in Bulk Distribution.
• Explain the importance of using safe work practices on a Bulk Distribution assignment.
• Complete the Disaster Requisition form (F6409).

Leadership Styles Workshop

The need for Emergency Services Program Managers (ESPMs) and supporting leads who can perform effectively within the American Red Cross, and in the field with our Partner Organizations, is of critical importance. Management styles and skills must be displayed by all with confidence, drawing upon a simple range of approaches to best suit each situation.

The basic management styles workshop will use a participative training style to help in reviewing these basic management styles for use and implementation in the field, helping participants to adapt their own style appropriately to each person or group being managed.

Serving Clients with Disabilities

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to outline Red Cross policies and practices related to providing services to clients with disabilities following a disaster.

DSHR Workshop - How The System Works

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) system, which enables the American Red Cross to provide prompt and efficient disaster relief services to the American people.

Foundations of Public Affairs: The Local Response

The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross Disaster Public Affairs employees and volunteers to initiate the public affairs activity at their local chapter by--
 ~Providing an overview of the American Red Cross Disaster Public affairs, enabling chapter communicators to begin working in the Disaster Public affairs rold.
 ~Explaining the Disaster Public Affairs structure on a local level.
 ~Preparing any Red Cross employee of volunteer to effectively respond to local   media inquiries and to proactively present Red Cross messaging.
