Welcome to Disaster Services

Classes for disaster volunteers are listed below.
The first class, Disaster Services - Overview,
is a prerequisite for ALL subsequent classes.

    
All classes are held at the Chapter House (unless otherwise noted) at 286 South Street, Hyannis. Weekday classes begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and last 3-3 1/2 hours. Weekend classes begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and last 6-8 hours (includes 1 hour for lunch). Class descriptions are available upon request: train@cciredcross.org.

Disaster Services: An Overview

This course is the pre-requisite for all other disaster courses.
Disaster Services: An Overview is an instructor-led, basic level course that provides an overview of Disaster Services at the American Red Cross.

The purpose of this course is to provide information about ways participants can help their community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters. Participants will also learn about volunteer opportunities at their local Red Cross chapter.

Disaster Instructors Specialty Training (DIST)

Disaster Instructor Specialty Training is an instructor-led course designed to prepare knowledgeable and experienced Disaster Services workers to teach basic level disaster training courses, thereby ensuring uniform and quality disaster training consistent with Red Cross policies and the regulations and procedures of Disaster Services.

January 21 & 22, 2012, Saturday & Sunday.

Shelter Operations

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.
Required for all DAT members.

Shelter Simulation

The purpose of this training is to provide participants with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter.
Required for all DAT members.

International Humanitarian Law

The course is intended to raise awareness among American Red Cross representatives and general audiences about the Geneva Conventions, the basic rules of international humanitarian law, and the role of the Red Cross during armed conflict.

CPR/AED

This course covers knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and provide basic care for cardiac and breathing emergencies and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) use for adults.

CPR & First Aid is offered free of charge to Red Cross certified volunteers only.
To become a certified volunteer you must take the following prerequisite classes:

   • Shelter Operations
   • Shelter Simulation
   • Psychological First Aid

Foundations of Disaster Mental Health

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

Participants will be licensed mental health professionals who are considering becoming involved in Red Cross disaster mental health (DMH) preparedness, response and recovery activities at their local chapter and on national disaster relief operations.

Prerequisites required:
Mental health professional with a current state license, to include:
   • Counselor
   • Marriage and Family Therapist
   • Psychiatrist
   • Psychologist
   • A registered nurse (RN) with psychiatric nursing experience and
      training beyond the normal rotation required for a RN.
   • Social Worker

Client Casework

Client Casework is intended for Red Cross employees and volunteers who are interested in acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to conduct client interviews and provide appropriate emergency disaster assistance to help meet a client's immediate disaster-caused needs.
Required for all DAT members.

This is a 6-hour class, therefore it is broken up into two nights - you must attend both classes.

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment is a blended-learning course consisting of two components, online and instructor-led.

The online training component of the course (Part 1) resides on the Red Cross Learning Management System (LMS).  It provides an overview of the Disaster Assessment activity and its related tasks.  The instructor-led component of the course (Part 2) will reinforce and build upon content presented in the online component while providing participants with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and develop skills in Disaster Assessment through applied learning activities.

Psychological First Aid

This basic level Disaster Services course consists of five separate segments and a self-review questionnaire which is completed after the training has been completed. The course provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve. In addition, it provides practical suggestions about what you can say and do as you practice the principles of Psychological First Aid.

Logistics: An Overview

The purpose of this course is to provide basic information about the processes of Material Support Services activities in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed by material Support services workers and how they can become involved in their local chapter.

Bulk Distribution

The purpose of this course is to prepare participants for the roles, responsibilities and tasks involved in setting up, operating and supporting a Bulk Distribution operation in the chapter and on a disaster relief operation.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to–
• Identify the tasks and responsibilities of a Bulk Distribution worker.
• Locate bulk distribution operational information in the handbook.
• Describe the role of the chapter in Bulk Distribution.
• Explain the importance of using safe work practices on a Bulk Distribution assignment.
• Complete the Disaster Requisition form (F6409).

Leadership Styles Workshop

The need for Emergency Services Program Managers (ESPMs) and supporting leads who can perform effectively within the American Red Cross, and in the field with our Partner Organizations, is of critical importance. Management styles and skills must be displayed by all with confidence, drawing upon a simple range of approaches to best suit each situation.

The basic management styles workshop will use a participative training style to help in reviewing these basic management styles for use and implementation in the field, helping participants to adapt their own style appropriately to each person or group being managed.

Disaster Assessment - Basics

Disaster Assessment Basics is a 2.5 hour basic level course that encompasses the tasks and responsibilities of the Disaster Assessment activity on a disaster relief operation. This course is not a replacement for the Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment (DSIMS200B) course.

This new course is designed for local community volunteers, primarily Disaster Action Team (DAT) members, other agencies and community organizations who desire to work in the Disaster Assessment activity.

Health Services Response Workshop

The purpose of this course is to prepare licensed health professionals to either work in their local chapter jurisdiction, or be deployed to a Red Cross disaster relief operation and function as health professionals within the Health Services Protocols.

Foundations of Public Affairs: The Local Response

The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross Disaster Public Affairs employees and volunteers to initiate the public affairs activity at their local chapter by:
  • Providing an overview of the American Red Cross Disaster Public affairs, enabling chapter     communicators to begin working in the Disaster Public affairs role.
  • Explaining the Disaster Public Affairs structure on a local level.
  • Preparing any Red Cross employee of volunteer to effectively respond to local media inquiries and to     proactively present Red Cross messaging.

    ERV's: Ready, Set Roll

    The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to operate an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment safely and effectively to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster. You must take the on-line test prior to class, and a road test right after class.

      Satisfactory Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Report
